Sorry that posting has been light, but ninja and I have been away. We, along with our wives and one pooch, have been off camping in The Shenandoah National Park. Gorgeous spot, I must say. We spent four days enjoying tent-life and natural beauty of rural VA, far away from emails and phone calls. Instead, we had raging camp fires, marshmallow treats and cheap beers. It was nice.
And we even had some fishing. We took a few hours on Saturday to explore the Hogcamp Branch, a smallish feeder to the Rose River. The Hogcamp offers up a good number of little, aggressive, beautiful brookies in a series of plunge pools as it makes its way down the side a mountain. This is a type of fishing I haven't done much of, but could certainly get used to. After my first stop in one of the pools, I was hooked same as those fish.
The fish ate caddis flies, dimes and Mercer's Micro Mayfly Nymph – an olive beadhead with epoxied wing case - but I expect that they aren’t too picky about what they take and I didn't bother to change flies because of that. As it happened, we were able to pull these brookies from just about every pool we stopped at, including a swell double hook-up on dry flies to end the day.
