Tricked Trout

Here are the long-anticipated 2009 Fishing Goals, in no particular order:

~ Catch a fish in at least 3 new rivers.

~ Catch a fish in a new state. I’ve caught fish in AK*, CO, MA, MD, MI*, MT, NJ, NY, OR, PA, VA, VT, WA, and WI*. Asterisks indicate spinning rod rather than fly rod, which means I caught fish there long, long ago.

~ Catch a fish during every month from March to December. I’m not including January and February for some odd reason.

~ Catch a fish at night (between 10pm and 4am).

~ Catch a fish on a mouse pattern. Umm, I’ll probably try this pattern out at night.

~ Catch a fish from the very depths of the Beaverkill’s Sunoco Pool. More will be said about this plan at some later date.

~ Tie more flies. Move from "Terrible" fly-tyer to "Average" fly-tyer. Baby steps, you see.

~ Take someone for their first time on a river, fly-fishing.

Most fisherman are crazy. Some are crazier than others.

Progress Report #1

Last winter was the first time I ever made a consistent and concerted effort to tie my own flies. I've stopped and started the hobby a half-dozen times in the last fifteen years, but last year I decided I would really get into it. I got more gear, put together a portable tying kit and put some serious time in practicing techniques. And it paid off too. Last spring I caught my first trout on a fly I tied myself.

This winter has been much more productive than last. And lately, I've decided I'll fill a box. Here's the start:

Rest assured I've tied many more than this, but there is a plan for this box and these are the ones that fit that plan.

This is Chloe. She loves playing in rivers. This makes her a less-than-ideal fishing companion, but I don't hold it against her.

My name is Steve. I try to trick trout. More often than not, they trick me.

My buddy Mike, aka ninja, will be posting here as well. He's trickier than I am, but since I helped introduced him to fly fishing, I'm taking full credit for that (where none is due).

I call the suburbs of Philadelphia home, while Mike currently finds himself in the trout Mecca that is New Jersey. Yes, we occasionally long for wider waters, but we make do with what we've got.

We hope you enjoy what is here, but truthfully, we're just passing time until I find ourselves on a river again.
